The Alien Invasive Plant Programme at the Greater Cradle Nature Reserve (GCNR) is a vital conservation effort dedicated to protecting and restoring the reserve\u2019s unique highveld grassland ecosystem. The programme focuses on the eradication of two major invasive species, Black Wattle<\/span> (<\/span>Acacia mearnsii<\/span><\/i>) and Pompom Weed <\/span>(Campuloclinium macrocephalum<\/span><\/i>) both of which threaten indigenous vegetation, biodiversity, and grazing capacity for wildlife.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2022, over 200,000 Black Wattle trees have been cleared from the Reserve, using a combination of mechanical and manual removal methods. Cleared material is repurposed into firewood, compost, and <\/span>bio-char\u2019, ensuring a zero-waste approach while restoring indigenous habitats and creating local employment opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our approach to the eradication of pompom weed include selective herbicide application, physical uprooting, and the introduction of natural biological agents. The combination of these methods ensures effective and sustainable restoration of indigenous grasslands, reducing the dominance of invasive species and promoting the recovery of indigenous flora.<\/span><\/p>\n

The programme also serves as a living research platform. GCNR actively encourages collaboration with university students and researchers, providing opportunities for academic studies and environmental monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Waste Management Programme at the Greater Cradle Nature Reserve promotes a Cradle to Table approach\u00a0 turning waste into valuable resources through recycling, bokashi composting, and biodiesel production from used cooking oil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Organic waste is converted into compost that nourishes the Reserve\u2019s vegetable garden, which in turn supplies fresh produce to the Cradle Boutique Hotel. Used cooking oil from the hotel and local partners is refined into biodiesel to power reserve vehicles, reducing emissions and landfill waste.<\/span><\/p>\n
